Rochester Street Demolition

Salamanca, NY

  • This project took place on the Allegany Reservation, a sovereign territory, in the City of Salamanca. The project required the handling, removal, packaging and off-site disposal of asbestos-containing materials and debris from a former furniture plant that was destroyed in a fire. The vacant buildings were once the headquarters for the Fancher Furniture Co., which began operation in the smaller building on Rochester Street in 1911. The much larger, four-story building where the fire began was built in 1923 and operated by the same company. A tunnel on the fourth floor of the buildings connected them over Rochester Street. The project also involved the demolition of selected buildings which were damaged during the fire, but did not collapse as a result of the fire. This required coordination between SCMC, the Contractors and the inspecting agency.
